Next time you’re on a dock in Prince Rupert, look over the edge. Those soft, feathery tufts swaying in the current? They’re worms!

Northern feather duster worms are one of the most common species living on the underside of docks and pilings around Kaien Island. They build flexible, leathery tubes up to 45 cm long (largest recorded was 60 cm!) and spend their entire adult lives anchored inside them.

What looks like a flower is actually a crown of tentacles that these worms use to filter-feed on plankton and microscopic bacteria from the water flowing past. If you cast a shadow over them on the dock, the whole crown of tentacles might snap back inside their tube for safety.

Species like this one are easy to overlook, but they’re an important part of the nearshore food web and habitat.
