The North Coast Ecology Centre Society (NCECS) is a non-profit organization working to create a
permanent education centre in Prince Rupert, BC that highlights the region’s ecological richness, both
terrestrial and marine. Our mission is to inspire a sense of awe, respect and stewardship for this area, its
wildlife, people and traditions. The North Coast Ecology Centre Society operates in the traditional territory
of the Coast Ts’msyen and Sm’algyax speaking peoples, with their participation, guidance and approval,
the NCECS’s goal is to incorporate and include local indigenous knowledge, stories, and language. Using
a combination of engaging programs and exhibits, including live displays of fish and marine invertebrates
(collected and released each season), the centre will offer a new tourist destination, activate and
revitalize Prince Rupert’s waterfront, and become a community resource for locals to connect with and
learn about the environment around them.
Position Description
We are specifically seeking a candidate who is available to assist our team working part time on
Sundays and Tuesdays beginning September 3rd until mid October. The Environmental
Educator will undertake and oversee many of the day-to-day operations at the Ecology Centre
in support of the NCECS mission and goals. Duties include: Assisting with opening, running,
and closing of the Ecology Centre with support from the NCECS Coordinator along with other
staff and volunteers. Additional tasks include developing and running educational programming
with schools and youth groups, assisting with communications and social media, assisting with
fundraising; organizing and supporting volunteers, assisting with the planning and end of
season closure for the Centre, and other duties as required.
Position responsibilities will include:
❏ Developing and delivering interpretive programs
❏ Designing displays and mini-exhibits for pop-up centre
❏ Animal collection and exemplary care of marine invertebrates
❏ Providing engaging interpretation to visitors at the pop-up centre
❏ Supporting and managing volunteers
❏ Undertaking community and visitor consultation through surveys and feedback forms
❏ Working with partner organizations and the board to execute the society’s mission
❏ Supporting the North Coast Ecology Centre’s social media platforms
Desired qualifications:
❏ Self-motivated individual with a passion for environmental education
❏ Experience developing and delivering education programs and/or public speaking
❏ Able to work well under minimal supervision and within a small team
❏ Knowledgeable of north coast ecology (particularly marine) and driven to learn more
❏ Excellent written and verbal communication
❏ Experience administering groups and pages on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram)
❏ Organized with strong attention to detail
❏ Knowledge of Ts’msyen history, culture, and Sm’algya̱x language an asset
❏ Animal care experience an asset
❏ Driver’s license and access to vehicle an asset (mileage compensated)
This position offers $20 per hour. The position will be based out of Prince Rupert, BC. Local candidates
will be prioritized.
